Bearden Middle School Sessions

For the 2011 - 2012 School Year, we had to privilege of working with some local middle school students in Knoxville, TN. Michael Weineinger, a native New Yorker, and now an art teacher at Bearden Middle School, has been teaching his students about contemporary art, street art, and graffiti. He invited us to BMS for some collaborative projects that proved to be valuable for all parties involved.

In Fall 2011, Lifted Lab gave presentations at Bearden Middle School to 6th and 7th grade art students about modern day artists. We talked about Bigfoot, Infamous JeanClaude, Grifter, Zach Widgren, Berk Visual, Lifter Baron, and other young creatives. Students got to see a powerpoint presentation about the work of these artists, and collaborative projects they produce. We explored the idea of making a career from art, and encouraged kids to follow their creativity.

Students began working on a project about cultural diversity in September. They were given the assignment to create a mask from  layers of colored paper that represents a unique culture from another part of the world. After completing this project, a handful of the masks would be selected for an art show in downtown Knoxville hosted by Lifted Lab. The art show was titled "These Funky Masks" and took place in November of 2011.

In Spring of 2012, Lifted Lab returned to BMS for an evening themed around New York City. We set up a workshop table for kids, parents, grandparents to stop by and see art, prints, toys, apparel, books, and stickers by Lifted Lab artists and New York artists that we're inspired by. Kids learned about the origins of graffiti and how to practice bubble letters and hand styles.

Shout out to Michael Weininger for the opportunity to put all of this together and big up to all the inspiring, talented kids following their creativity at BMS.

"From Kentouchy With Love" Pix + Reopening

Fireproof Gallery bounced back from Winter hiatus last month with the opening of a new show called "From Kentouchy With Love." Creators ZACH WIDGREN, Katy Smith, and Katie Moseley have been collaborating on this space since its opening about a year ago. The newest show is a reflection on Kentucky (Widgren's home state) and tells a few stories within the murals, paintings, and sculpture pieces. As per usual, quarter pipes and a stage for music is part of the warehouse installation.

The show opened last month on April 14th and April 21, and will be reopening for another show this Saturday, May 5th. There will be a few local acts playing music starting around 8:00pm and lasting until late. The first 20 people through the door receive a small painting and 1 lucky person will win a large scale artwork.

Barcade Anniversary & Widgren Art Show

TONIGHT the Fort Sanders Yacht Club, AKA the beloved Barcade, will be having their four year anniversary party! It's hard to believe four year have passed already since this hole in the wall opened up and become our favorite place to have a low-key beer. The FSYC is still a secret to some, many people have no idea this dive bar lined with 25ยข throwback arcade games exists.

Widgren at the Barcade in 2009

Zach Widgren is part of the OG Yacht Club Crew, and has helped them line their walls with local artists' work each month for First Friday. This has been a home base for Zach's art, too. It only seems appropriate for him to be displaying his work during the anniversary party. Alongside his paintings, local lovelies Katy Smith and Katie Moseley will be hanging their work as well.

Zach has stated this will be his last art show in Knoxville for now, as he wishes to focus entirely on his new project and book, By The Way The Bird Flies. In just a few days, he'll be relocating to New Orleans, so make sure you swing through to send him off and show him some love! Through his many art shows, events, and founding the almighty Fireproof Gallery, Zach has really helped the art scene evolve in Knoxville. Cheers, Widgren!

The Barcade rules. They have around 70 different beers, bottles and draft. There is a secret special from 4pm-midnight, and they will be screen printing shirts for their loyal deckhands and shipmates. Bring it!

Sunday Morning's First Friday

Sunday Morning LTD Edition Paper Craft Toy
For the First Friday of 2012, Sunday Morning joined us at Swagger in downtown Knoxville, TN to show his art and spin some of his tunes. DJ Wigs was also on the decks as our First Friday resident selector and mix master. Sunday Morning has been working on instrumentals for a few years, playing some shows around the Southeast and his homebase in South Carolina. Recently, he has been exploring other creative outlets such as painting, collage making, and even sewing.

 Sunday Morning Dropping Anthems
His open-to-interpretation symbolic collages are inspired by world culture and built with layers of vintage National Geographic clippings. It all started when Sunday Morning came up on an archive of Nat Geo issues and was inspired to make something from this treasure trove of fine photography. He doesn't start his pieces with a planned idea, rather working intuitively and realizing the meaning and stories weaved into the pieces after they are completed.

In addition to his collages, Sunday also brought up some particle boards he made into portraits of some familiar Adult Swim characters.

This was the first public showing of his work, and it brought out old and young art crawlers of Knoxville and other cities for the opening party at Swagger. People found the work interesting to dissect, and fun to look at. Prints of the works were available in limited numbers, and a few were sold old by the end of the night.

"Africa Phone Home"

"Secret Garden"
And just to show us what he might have coming up next, there were some custom paper craft toys made for this show. Sunday Morning has future aspirations of crafting a vinyl toy series, and is currently experimenting with characters and classic cut-and-fold/paper doll style toys. His first round includes a mini-Sunday Morning rocking his silver mask and toting accessories such as his records, spray paint, and MPC.

Sunday Morning will be launching his brand new site, this SUNDAY! Be on the lookout and stay up on his site for links to his Bandcamp, Flickr, Blog, Youtube, etc.

BIG thank you  to DJ Wigs, Kaitlyn of Swagger, Tabitha, and Drew.

First Friday of 2012

"Lifted Lab"

We've got a special audio+visual showcase coming for the First Friday of 2012 with our guest artist and selector, Sunday Morning. Hailing from Columbia, SC, this dude has been making underground waves with his music blog, Chuuch, and recent crafty cuts. We're excited to see what he chooses to spin for us from his personal production archives and funky beat collection.

"Ancient Cipher"

Sunday Morning has also been making some vintage style wheat paste pieces, which he will be bringing up to display for the month of January.  This will be the first showing of his art work ever, and we're stoked to be helping make that happen.

Also, he just announced that he is working on 20 coloring books for the opening, which will make a nice lil' souvenir for y'all that come through! These coloring books also feature exclusive Sunday Morning x Lifted Lab paper craft toys.

So, it's official! Come on out, Knoxville...and celebrate the start of 2012 with some fresh sights and sounds!

DJ Wigs will also be holding us down as always as the resident First Friday DJ- much love to you! Happy New Year to all!

Fireproof Winter Hiatus

Saturday will be the final showing of "Gracious Crumple" at Fireproof Gallery, which is the latest installation from ZACH WIDGREN, Katy Smith, Katie Moseley, Amanda McCall, Dave Grimes, Andy Fagan, Rachel Gurley, and others.

This installation differs from the previous shows in that there are no canvases. All artists have contributed to wall space directly with spray paint and installation pieces.

After the "Gracious Crumple Farewell," Fireproof Gallery will be taking a Winter hiatus to prepare for next year's master plans. Come get it in one last time with all the art goons of Knoxville! BYOB as usual, and there will be plenty of live music through out the night, as usual.

Haunted Mansion...lights on.

If you missed all of your opportunities to see the haunted house, well you got lucky because there is one final showing this Saturday as well. The lights will be on and everyone is free to do a walk-through in the light to see all the work that went into creating this creepy space.

Haunted Warehouse

Fireproof Gallery has decided to turn the back end of the warehouse into a haunted house of art for the Halloween holiday. The old Fireproof Storage building that houses the gallery is already fairly creepy, and supposedly haunted.

After many hours and days of work, the Trash Wave Collective, which includes ZACH WIDGREN and the other creators behind Fireproof, have transformed the baron industrial space into a two-story adventure of oddities. Among this maze, guests will find puzzles, multiple chambers to navigate through, and the artists dressed as characters waiting to mess with your mind.

The Haunted House will be open the weekend before Halloween and through the beginning of November. On Halloween, The Pilot Light will be hosting a party in the main Fireproof space and the haunted house will be open during this time as well.

Each night will be slightly different with additions and subtractions of certain elements.

Infamous Knoxville Recap

Friday, June 3rd, Infamous JeanClaude returned to Knoxville for his second time for the opening of his art show, "Brainstorm Under My 59/50," at Swagger in Market Square of Downtown Knoxville. First Friday June was a big night in Knoxville! We had lots of community support, and a nice hip-hop vibe that we were able to maintain (big thanks to DJ Wigs!), while outside in the Square a Bob Dylan Birthday Bash had brought out a lot of folks. Infamous JeanClaude displayed new pieces for the show that communicated his creative processing, inspirations, and motivations. All the art will remain in Swagger for the month of June, so swing through and check it out in person if you haven't done so yet!

After the show wrapped up at Swagger, we took a trip down to the Fireproof Gallery to meet up with Zachary Widgren for some late night inspiration. This was Infamous JeanClaude's first time touring the new gallery space, and he dropped some of his brainstorm signatures in the creative cluster...

Infamous JeanClaude Returns to Knoxville

We are very excited to be bringing Infamous JeanClaude back for his second show in Knoxville, TN. Last time, we had a great turn out at Aisle 9 in the Old City...the cops even tried to shut our party down because there were so many people in the space (we won, though...). Come check out all NEW work this Friday, June 3, for First Friday at Swagger. DJ Wigs will be spinning some vinyl, Swagger will have some great sneaker deals going on, and there will be some dank refreshments as well. Infamous JeanClaude will be in the house for the opening! Aisle 9 One Year Anniversary

Knoxville is growing up! Aisle 9 opened its doors one year ago in the Old City as the only grocery/convenience store downtown. This spot also functions as an art space, and has been hosting First Friday openings for artists who display art for each month. ZACH WIDGREN had the first art show ever here last year, before the store was actually even open. Aisle Nine was basically empty, and Zach's art was hanging in the refrigerator coolers.

And now, things have come full circle: Aisle Nine is one of THREE grocery stores downtown these days (big ups to community legend John Haas for starting the trend). They are celebrating this week with lots of specials on beer, cheese, and other delicious things. Mr. Widgren will also be celebrating by having another art show there for June's First Friday. Free keg while it lasts!
